Federation architecture.

Walk
2
Woolwich and Hunters Hill Together
Starts at the Old School House – Gladstone Avenue
This walk allows groups to take in the ambiance of both
suburbs. Gladstone Avenue is the dividing line between Hunters
Hill and Woolwich. The first part of the walk goes west into
Hunters Hill and takes in the grand ‘boom time’ sandstone houses
for which the suburb is famous.
The commentary
gives the history of Hunters Hill and some fascinating facts on
its developers The Joubert Brothers and Edward
Jeanneret and
does not forget to pay tribute to the stone mason skill of the
Italians and the labour of the Irish.
The walk then turns
east and into Woolwich with the remnants of its industrial
past particularly the great Woolwich Dock. We see how this ‘ugly
duckling’ has become an expensive ‘swan’. Walk includes Kelly’s
Bush.
At all times the
views are magnificent as at this narrow part of the Peninsular,
only ¼ of a kilometer across, there is the magnificent vista of
either the Parramatta River or the Lane Cove River. Recommended.

HOW TO
GET THERE EASILY
CHOOSE either FERRY or BUS or CAR
Watch Out for our
Woolwich Walks Signs
FERRY
Woolwich is well served by the inner-harbour ferry service. The
ferry leaves from Circular Quay (generally from Wharf 5) at
regular intervals and takes about 15 to 20 minutes to complete
the journey.
For weekday morning walks we recommend the 10.25a.m. ferry
leaving from Wharf 5, Circular Quay. This ferry is met at
Valencia wharf Woolwich by a Government bus. If the walk is at
Woolwich, then people should alight at the Gladstone Avenue
stop, three minutes up the hill. If the walk is at Hunters Hill,
people should alight at the bus stop opposite the Post Office
about 8 minutes away. Walk up the little road beside the Post
Office ... Ernest Street and that leads to the Bowling Club in
Madeline Street.
BUS
There is a regular bus service to the Hunters Hill Peninsula as
well as the buses that meets the ferry. (No bus for the ferry on
Sundays). There is a bus stop outside the Woolwich Walks office
at 62 Woolwich Road.
CAR
The drive along the Hunter's Hill peninsula is enchanting.
Approaching from Ryde Road you will enter Church Street (or if
coming along Lane Cove Road, take the Church Street exit ramp.
Church Street becomes Alexandra Street, which later becomes
Woolwich Road. The Woolwich Walks office is located at 62
Woolwich Road.
If coming to the Bowling Club, turn at the Post Office in
Alexandra Street, and that will take you to Madeline Street.
There is plenty of car parking at the Bowling Club and easy
on-street parking under shady trees at 62 Woolwich Road. Watch
out for our signs at the roadside.
KNOWLEDGE, FRIENDSHIP AND SOCIAL INTERACTION ARE THE GREAT OUTCOMES OF A WALK WITH SYDNEY
